Psychological Services

School Psychologists are professionals trained to work with children, adolescents, and their teachers and families. They work with all school personnel to help make education for students a positive rewarding experience. Newcomb Central School is served by a part-time school psychologist.

Mr. Steve Wilk works in the district one day per week (currently Mondays) and coordinates services for students with special needs. He completes psychoeducational evaluations to help determine students' strengths and needs and collaborates with all stakeholders in order to effectively address identified needs. In additions, he is responsible for ensuring that the district remains in compliance with special education federal and state policies and acts as the liaison between the district and the State Education Department, adult service agencies, preschool providers, regional data reporting center, and BOCES. Mr. Wilk holds both New York State and National certifications in school psychology.

Many children and adolescents face problems from time to time. They may:

- fear starting preschool, kindergarten, or first grade
- feel unsure about themselves
- manage their time poorly
- fall behind in school work
- be upset about family events such as divorce or death
- feel depressed
- lack self-discipline
- experiment with drugs or alcohol
- think about suicide
- find school boring
- lack study skills
- worry about their sexuality
- face a tough decision about college or work
- consider dropping out of school
- have feelings they don't understand
- lack awareness of their aptitudes and abilities

OR ..., they may simply need a helping hand over a rough spot. School psychologists help parents, teachers, and students understand and address problems and promote positive mental health and effective environments for learning. Newcomb's school psychologist is ready and willing to assist the school community with any concerns related to learning and/or behavior. To access Mr. Wilk's services, simply call the school.
